Clinical Hair Research Fellowship

Vera H. Price, MD, FRCP (C), Director

The Clinical Hair Research Fellowship at UCSF provides the setting to acquire clinical and research expertise in hair. Within the academic, clinical and pharmaceutical arenas, there is a growing appreciation of the need for a cadre of dermatologists with a strong command of the field of hair and hair biology.

Dr. Vera Price, Professor of Clinical Dermatology, University of California, San Francisco, is Director and Mentor of the Fellowship program.

The fellowship offers a unique opportunity to acquire expertise in hair biology and the nuances of diagnosis and management of patients with hair/scalp problems. Disorders such as alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, cicatricial alopecia, structural hair shaft anomalies, and special problems of African-American hair, are all seen on a regular basis. Training in basic laboratory skills relating to hair is also included.

In addition to strong clinical training, the fellowship provides firsthand experience in conducting clinical trials with new therapies, and exposure to clinical research design and scientific methods. The fellow will be able to conduct an original research project relating to hair biology.

Proficiency in scalp histopathology, including reading horizontal and vertical scalp biosies, is acquired under the tutelage of Drs. Phil LeBoit and Tim McCalmont, nationally recognized dermatopathologists with a special expertise in hair and scalp pathology.
