Melanoma and Cutaneous Oncology Fellowship

The Cutaneous Oncology Program at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center offers a two-year fellowship in cutaneous oncology. The faculty on the program includes internationally renowned oncologists, surgeons, dermatopathologists, as well as an outstanding group of basic and translational researchers in the area of skin cancer. The program provides an immersive environment that allows our fellows to obtain a comprehensive exposure to all relevant aspects of management and biology of skin cancer primarily melanoma and metastatic non-melanoma skin cancers. The goal of the fellowship is to train and mentor future leaders in this important clinical and research area.
Research Program
The program led by Boris Bastian includes as faculty Drs. Allan Balmain, Dan Bikle, Martin McMahon, Frank McCormick, Pamela Munster, Mohammed Kashani-Sabet, Dan Pinkel. Programmatic interests reach from the discovery of relevant genetic alterations in melanoma, target medication, preclinical modeling, biomarker discovery and validation to assist prognosis and diagnosis to molecular epidemiology.
Clinical Program
The clinical melanoma effort includes Drs.Adil Daud (Medical Oncology), Mohammed Kashani-Sabet and Suraj Venna (Dermatology), Stanley Leong and Michael Alvarado (Surgical Oncology), Philip LeBoit, Timothy McCalmont, Beth Ruben, Boris Bastian (Dermatopathology) and Roy Grekin, Isaac Neuhaus, Sarah Arron, Siegrid Yu (Dermatological Surgery). The program has an active clinical trials component, focusing on the development of novel rational clinical therapeutics.
The fellow is expected to be actively involved in the clinical care of pigmented lesions, cutaneous oncology, melanoma and pigmented cutaneous lymphoma patients covering all clinically relevant aspects of the disease, trial design and evaluation. Additional activities include involvement in independent research projects under the supervision of one of the faculty members with the goal of publication.
Eligibility Requirements: Post Dermatology residency, hematology/oncology fellows, recent graduates of internal medicine, medical interns with interest in medical oncology.
Must have CA Medical License (prior to beginning the program).
Stipend: Depends on degree and relevance of prior training.
Accreditation Status: Not ACGME accredited.
