UCSF Department of Dermatology
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Dermatology's clinical elective. When space is available, U.S. and Canadian visiting students (we DO NOT accept international students) may apply to participate in the clinical electives in listed below. There is no remuneration for these electives and neither room nor board is provided. Students must be in their 4th year of training and comply with all UCSF's requirements.
Since 2009, UCSF has accepted applications submitted on-line through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) for US Medical Students. Canadian students please visit the UCSF website for application instructions.
Please note that we accept ONLY students who plan to pursue a Dermatology Residency and who have provided a letter of recommendation from the Chairman of the Dermatology Department at their home institution. If and only if your medical school does not have a Department of Dermatology may you provide a letter from an individual who has mentored you and is able to speak for your interest in pursuing a career in dermatology. Applications that do no fulfill this requirement will NOT be considered. The letter should indicate that you are a strong candidate and intend to match in dermatology. Multiple letters are not necessary. You may upload this letter to the SUPPLEMENTAL DOCUMENTS section of the VSAS application (preferred method) or the letter may be sent e-mail or mail to Christina Walker or Laura Harrison (contact information below).

2017-2018 Application Dates:
UCSF allows us to offer electives ONLY after April 17, 2017. The system however opens in early February and you are welcome to apply at that time.
We offer 140.01 Clinical Dermatology, our 2-week clinical elective, to visitors. In order to accommodate visiting students who desire to take a one-month elective block we also offer 140.08, our 2-week Specialties elective subsequent to 140.01. If you are coming for 2 weeks ONLY you must take 140.01. You cannot take 140.08 only. We will begin offering the rotation the block beginning on July 18, 2016. PLEASE NOTE: The 140.08 Specialties (4-week elective) is only available if you have a prior arrangement with a specific faculty member. Please do not apply for it unless this is the case.

Block Calendar: Your dates of attendance must correspond with our calendar. You must start at the beginning of the block(s) and finish at the end of the block(s). No Exceptions can be made to this calendar.

You must withdraw at least 8 weeks before your starting date. Fees are non-refundable. All cancellations and changes must be made in writing. We may write a letter to your dean if, once scheduled and confirmed, you withdraw from an elective less than eight (8) weeks before the starting date or if you fail to notify us at all.
